Renovations of the priory were completed in 1997. In the church, the windows were glazed with plain glass. A decision was taken to hold a competition to commission stained glass windows from a contemporary artist. Entries were received from Pierre Buraglio, James Bishop, Jean-Pierre Bertrand and the competition winner, Aurélie Nemours.
Asceticism is the dominant theme of Aurélie Nemours' work. She begins with a figurative image and gradually removes everything she feels to be superficial - figures, then the curves, then the colours. At the end, only the lines and a single colour remain.
"It begins with the form, it gives the rhythm, and the secret is in the number." Aurélie Nemours was 86 when she created the stained glass windows at Salagon, the culmination of her research. The lead used to set the windows reflects the horizontal and vertical lines which are so important to her work, and give each of the six windows its own particular rhythm. The selenium red used in the windows gives a colour which is unaffected by the state of the sky and the passing clouds. This was the first time it had been used by a stained glass artist.
